Ridge Reading Challenge Devotion Genesis 12:3

All the families on earth will be blessed through you. (Genesis 12:3 NLT)

God made a covenant promise, to a man who most would have considered to be nobody special. The promise was that many nations would come from him and his descendants. God promised a man who was 90+ years old, with no children of his own, that his heirs would be God’s chosen people.

This special promise is a huge part of each of our own stories. It’s an example of God’s promises and relationship with us. Like Abraham, we aren’t someone special deserving of any favor. We have all made bad choices, and some of us have suffered the consequences of those decisions. God used Abraham’s heirs, a long list of imperfect people, to eventually lead to the birth of Jesus. Abraham’s story and the story of his descendants offer us hope. The stories of Abraham’s descendants offer example after example of God’s grace and His faithfulness to the promises He made.

Also, like Abraham, God still pursues us. He still offers us a savior who has changed our future. We are heirs to God’s promise to Abraham (Abram). The promise of this covenant produced a savior who offered us our own covenant with God, and thus we benefit from the blessings of God’s promise to Abraham.

I believe that God wanted us to see His faithfulness and commitment through this undeserving, unsuspecting family tree so that we could see the extent of His love, mercy, and grace for us today. If God used all of those stories to eventually change the world, how then will He use mine?

God, thank You for making me part of your master plan. Thank You for showing me that even when I don’t see it, You have it all under control. I am thankful that Your promise to Abraham so long ago provided a way for me.
