Adam's Blog: Five Ways to Pray for the Upcoming Election

As we prepare for the upcoming election, many of us may feel a mix of emotions—hope, anxiety, or uncertainty. But as followers of Christ, we can bring our concerns to God in prayer, trusting that He is in control. Here are five ways we can pray for the election, using the guidance of the Bible to keep us focused on Jesus before politics.

1. Pray for God’s Will to Be Done
While we may have our own preferences or opinions, ultimately, God’s wisdom is greater than ours (isn’t that comforting). To start, we can pray to the God of the universe for His will before our own opinions. Praying for His will reminds us to trust that He is in control, even if outcomes don’t go as we might hope.

“May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10 (NLT)

2. Pray for Wisdom and Discernment for Voters
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the issues, candidates, and voices during election season. Pray that voters would seek wisdom and discernment from God, allowing Him to guide their decisions. We can ask God to help people make informed and compassionate choices that align with His heart for justice and mercy. Be sure to include your own vote, and ask God for wisdom on what vote would honor Him the most.

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” — James 1:5 (NLT)

3. Pray for Peace and Respect in Political Conversations
Political discussions can often be a source of tension, especially among friends and family. Pray that people approach these conversations with grace, patience, and a spirit of respect, remembering that the way we treat people is important even when we disagree. Let’s ask God to help us be peacemakers in these situations, reflecting His love.

“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” — Ephesians 4:3 (NLT)

4. Pray for Leaders to Be Guided by Integrity and Compassion
Our leaders have a great responsibility to serve with integrity, compassion, and a sense of humility. My personal prayer is that every single leader might be in alignment with God’s will and be surrendered to Jesus. Pray for those candidates by name (even the ones you don't like). Pray that those running for office would seek God’s wisdom and be motivated by a desire to serve their communities. Ask that those elected would lead in ways that reflect God’s heart for justice, mercy, and humility.

“No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
— Micah 6:8 (NLT)

5. Pray for Unity and Healing

After the election, it’s very likely we’ll need to come together as a community, regardless of the outcome. Pray for healing and unity, that we would seek to work together with respect and compassion. Let’s ask God to help us move beyond our differences, finding common ground and purpose in serving others and building a better future.

“How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” — Psalm 133:1 (NLT)

As we approach this election season, let’s lean into prayer, trusting God with our hopes, concerns, and future. When we bring our hearts to Him, He promises to guide us, giving us peace and strength for the road ahead. Whatever it takes,
