Ridge Reading Challenge Devotional 1 Timothy 4:8

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.                                                                                                                                                                                      1 Timothy 4:8

As you read through the letter of 1 Timothy, you encounter this word multiple times: “eusebeia.” In English it’s translated “godliness.” It denotes a reverence to God and people, or a sense of duty. Christianity is involved in everything: school, work, play, physical training, science, sex, race relations, economics, and the home life. All is God’s and He created all things good. Too often, we separate our lives into that which is the world’s purview and that which is God’s. Wrong answer, it’s all God’s!

There is no struggle in your life that God cannot assist or that the Bible is silent on. It’s His perfect Word and we get to share its truth with the world. We are to show “progress.” This word in Greek, eusebeia, is military in nature and is that of a pathfinder, someone who shows the way, often in hostile territory. This is how we show eusebeia – we show others the way to God in a world held by the enemy.

When I was deployed to Iraq, I worked daily to protect and assist Arabic Muslims. Even though I disagreed with their politics, their culture, and their religion, each of them was created by God. Some of the leaders I worked with daily were passively supporting the very men trying to kill my fellow soldiers and me, yet Christ died for their sins just as much as mine. Eusebeia helps us to see others the way God sees them, and should instill in us a duty to share the truth of the Gospel to set them free.

Is there an area of your life you haven’t given to God? What can you do to surrender it to Him today?
